About

Founded in 1902, Schleider's is Central Texas's most complete source for furniture, mattresses, and home décor.  Guaranteed best selection, price and service is our promise every day.

Generations of Brenham-area shoppers have made Schleider's a tradition for furnishing their homes since 1902.  That first generation or two traveled to the store in horse-drawn carriages!

Speaking of generations, most of our sales staff has been part of Schleider's for decades.  In fact, we have two generations of two different families on the sales floor!  This means that you can be confident about receiving seasoned and well-informed guidance while you shop.  What you won't get is pressure.  We're here to inform, not to push, because our greatest value is your trust and your satisfaction for decades to come.

Groceries, cotton and spirits

Schleider's (founded as J. Schleder's Sons Co.) opened its doors as a general store that handled groceries and dry goods.  It also operated a cotton warehouse and provided a wagon yard where farmers unharnessed their teams to feed and rest while they shopped, and a saloon to serve locals and passengers waiting for trains at the passenger depot across the street.  Prohibition ended the saloon operation and helped redefine Schleider's as a home furnishings store.

Photography, quicksand and fallout shelter

Our loading docks and the side rail that runs alongside the store are popular with photographers and film crews who have used the store's exterior as a backdrop for vintage sets, bridal photo shoots and more.

Beyond our historic status and the store's well-preserved architecture, the store has a curious geologic base on quicksand!  Faced with this dilemma as the basement was being dug, our builders designed a "floating" basement underpinned by a wide apron that extends beyond the building's visible footprint.  During the Cold War Era (1950s - 1960s) Schleider Furniture's basement was an official fallout shelter.
