On the behalf of a grateful nation, we wanted to take a moment to share some history about Memorial Day, what it means and some ideas to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country.
Commonly associated with the red poppy flowers & parades, Memorial Day has a deeply meaningful sentiment behind it. Originally referred to as “Decoration Day”, the holiday started off as a day dedicated to decorating the graves of fallen soldiers as a way to honor their service. The name changed to Memorial Day in 1967 as the activities of honoring the fallen expanded into more than just decorating the gravesites. Present Day Memorial Day is often thought of as lake days, weekend parties and lively backyard bbq’s, but while times have changed, lets not forget the unfortunately somber history behind this day that gave us the privilege of celebrating this holiday.
Current ways to participate in Memorial Day include pausing at 3pm, the National Moment Remembrance Act. This is a moment of reflection and appreciation for the actions and sacrifices given for our freedoms. Another popular way to show gratitude and appreciation is to fly the American Flag at half staff from sunrise until noon (on Memorial Day), then raised to full staff from noon until sunset.
One way you can honor the fallen is by supporting living veterans in your community. We have many veteran-owned businesses in the Brenham community and urge you to support them as often as you can! List sourced from the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.
